The Circulatory System
The circulatory system (sometimes also named cardiovascular system) is made up of organs and cells and is responsible for the flow of blood, oxygen, nutrients and carbon dioxide around the whole body. It can be known as "the highway for blood". It is the circulatory system that is responsible for delivering oxygenated blood to every part of our body and then returning deoxygenated blood to the lungs. The circulatory system includes the heart, arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins. The heart is known as the most important organ of the circulatory system as it is that which controls the pumping of our blood. Look below for further information on the circulatory system and its functions.
Key Facts - The Circulatory System
- In one day, an average human will pump 2,000 gallons of blood around their body.
- There are 3 independent systems within the circulatory system: cardiovascular (heart), pulmonary (lungs) and systemic (arteries and veins) - Arteries carry blood Away from the heart - these are red in colour because they have oxygenated blood in them - Veins return blood back to the heart - these are blue because they have no oxygen in them. |
