The Muscular System
Our muscles are behind every single movement that our bodies make, both voluntary and involuntary. The muscles attach to our skeletal system and controlled by our nervous system so that we are able to walk, talk, sit, stand and eat. We wouldn't even be able to smile without muscles! :-( Our muscles are also hugely important in making our internal organs function correctly. - There are around 650 muscles in your body
- More than half of our body weight is made up by muscle mass
- There are 3 types of muscle:
- Skeletal muscle - voluntary muscles attached to our skeleton responsible for movement
- Smooth muscle - involuntary muscles found inside our internal organs and blood vessels
- Cardiac muscle - involuntary muscle found only in our heart responsible for our heart beating
- Muscles are made of muscle fiber
- Muscles are controlled by our brain and our nervous system
